Isotopic Ratios: The Key to Elemental Abundances and Nuclear Reactions in the Sun
نویسندگان
چکیده
Differences between the abundances of isotopes of elements in the planetary system, in the solar wind, and in solar flares suggest that a) the most abundant nuclear species in the sun is Fe (the ash of violent thermonuclear reactions at equilibrium) rather than H (the best fuel for thermonuclear reactions), and b) nuclear reactions in the outer regions of the sun produce N by the N(H, βν)N reaction. Diffusion in the sun enriches light-weight elements like H and He at the solar surface, where thermonuclear reactions occur, but the most abundant elements in the bulk sun are Fe, Ni, O, Si, S, Mg, and Ca.

Cosmic-ray Sources and Source Composition
Present data on cosmic-ray elemental and isotopic relative abundances are shown to be unable to distinguish between various models of cosmic-ray sources and their composition. For example, the model of freshly nucleosynthesized material from supernova explosions as the cosmic-ray source is unable to account for some measured, key cosmic-ray elemental abundances. This and two other models are ev...
متن کاملPossible in situ Tests of the Evolution of Elemental and Isotopic Abundances in the Solar Convection Zone
Helioseismology has shown that the chemical composition of the Sun has changed over its lifetime. The surface abundance of helium and heavy elements is believed to have decreased by up to 10% relative to their initial values. However, this reduction is too small to be tested by direct observations of the photospheric chemical composition. Here, we compare the predicted variations in the solar p...
متن کاملEuropium Isotopic Abundances in Very Metal-poor Stars
Europium isotopic abundance fractions are reported for the very metal-poor, neutron-capture-rich giant stars CS 22892-052, HD 115444, and BD +17◦3248. The abundance fractions, derived from analysis of several strong Eu II lines appearing in high-resolution spectra of these stars, are in excellent agreement with each other and with their values in the Solar System: fr(Eu)≃ fr(Eu) ≃ 0.5. Detailed...
متن کاملNucleosynthetic imprints from classical nova explosions: past to present
Classical novae are dramatic stellar explosions that take place in the accreted envelopes of white dwarfs in close binary systems. These unique cataclysmic events constitute a crucible where different scientific disciplines merge, including astrophysics, nuclear and atomic physics, cosmochemistry, high-energy physics or computer science. In this paper, we will focus on the nucleosynthesis accom...
متن کاملIRON AND NICKEL ISOTOPIC RATIOS IN PRESOLAR SiC GRAINS
We report the first Fe isotopic anomalies and the first Ni isotopic ratio measurements in presolar SiC grains of separate KJG from the Murchison meteorite. With NanoSIMS, we analyzed Fe and Ni in 37 X grains from Type II supernovae and 53 SiC grains of other types. TheNi/Fe and Co/Fe ratios in grains of all types aremuch higher than in the gas from which the grains are believed to have condense...
